For many years, Tolima remained hidden in plain sight.  Cradled between other well-known coffee growing regions, armed conflict and coca leaf production isolated small coffee producers in the region and exposed them to high rates of violence. During this time the municipality of Planadas, located in the southernmost corner of Tolima, remained an untapped source of specialty coffee.  Thousands of producers in this area have been cultivating coffee on just a few acres of land intercropped with shade trees, bananas, corn, beans and sugarcane. As conflict has subsided in recent years, locally organized associations have taken the lead in creating market access for these producers.

Established in 2014 with 59 producer-members Asociación de Productores de Café Especial La Orquídea (ASOPROCAFEES) has focused on training producers on organic practices and helping them obtain certifications. The cooperative has invested in basic infrastructure needs like road improvements, established local warehouses, created micro-credit for producers, and invested in social programs. The cooperative has also launched healthcare initiatives and provides life insurance and educational opportunities to help improve the quality of life for member coffee producers and their families.

Their service is a great choice for anyone who, like me, wants easier access great quality coffee and anyone who might feel overwhelmed trying to look into the sourcing bonafides of different brands. I appreciate that they do this work for their clients, and also support different roasters who are doing good work.
