From the Roaster:

The team at Amavida Coffee Roasters is thrilled to bring-back this offering of Papua New Guinea coffee. This unique offering is from Baroida Estate, a remote coffee plantation located in the Jabara Mountains of the country’s Eastern Highlands region. The Lamari River Valley and Mount Jabara feature thousands of hectares of former colonial coffee estates as well as the plots of many smallholder coffee producers. Baroida Estate is a 220 hectare plantation with close to one million trees and is one of the last true single-estate plantation coffees in Papua New Guinea. Baroida Estate was founded by Ben Colbran in the 1960s when early settlers to the region began looking at coffee as a long-term sustainable crop. These days, Baroida Estate is being run by the son and grandson of its founder and much of the region’s coffee comes through Baroida Estate for processing and exportation. Baroida Estate produces around 200 tons of Papua New Guinea coffee each harvest and has been involved in efforts to improve the region’s infrastructure by building roads, schools, and bridges. Interestingly, the estate’s twenty six plots of coffee plants are GPS mapped and both the tree varieties for each plot and the day’s production are tracked.

This is the second time that our team has ever featured a coffee from this growing region, and we are excited about the diverse flavors that have made themselves apparent in our early roasts. This fully washed Papua New Guinea coffee from Baroida Estate features some less common varieties and a syrupy mouthfeel. Melon, black pepper, and floral notes in both the dry fragrance and wet aroma make this a very aromatic cup of coffee, and the underlying caramel and raisin flavors will make it a popular choice.

I have been a subscriber since their launch, having been introduced to Better Grounds at a coffee festival. I have enjoyed every monthly selection so far! Their service is a great choice for anyone who, like me, wants easier access great quality coffee and anyone who might feel overwhelmed trying to look into the sourcing bonafides of different brands. I appreciate that they do this work for their clients, and also support different roasters who are doing good work.
